4. MAIN CHAPEL

 

The Main Chapel of Toledo Cathedral, called the Capilla Mayor, is one of the most important and sacred spaces in the entire building. It is located at the end of the central nave, just beyond the choir, and it is separated by a beautiful and tall gothic fence made of iron and stone. This helps mark it as a special and holy area.

The Capilla Mayor is used for the most important religious ceremonies, such as bishop celebrations, special masses, and events like Corpus Christi. Only priests, bishops, and choir members usually enter this space during services. The rest of the people watch and listen from outside the fence.

The chapel has a very tall ceiling, with a Gothic vault supported by large columns and pointed arches. The ceiling is decorated with ribs in elegant patterns, typical of Gothic architecture. The height and design make the space feel open, majestic, and full of light.

On the walls of the chapel, there are many important tombs. Several archbishops of Toledo are buried here, in stone or marble sepulchers, often decorated with sculptures of the person lying down in prayer. These tombs show how important the cathedral was to the religious leaders of Spain.

Another highlight is the presence of beautiful stained glass windows in the chapel. These windows are very colorful and let sunlight enter the space in a magical way. Some of them show biblical scenes or saints, while others have patterns and symbols. The oldest windows date back to the 14th century, and many were made by artists from France and Germany.

At the back of the chapel, you can also find impressive decorative elements such as Gothic carvings, golden stars, and small statues of angels and saints. These were meant to create a sacred and majestic space, connecting the people with God.
