5. MAIN ALTAR
The main altarpiece of Toledo Cathedral is one of the most impressive in all of Spain. It is located in the Capilla Mayor(Main Chapel) and was built between the late 15th and early 16th centuries. It is a perfect example of Gothic art, full of color, gold, and religious meaning.
This giant altarpiece is made of painted and gilded wood and reaches almost to the ceiling. It is divided into different levels and panels, each one telling a story from the life of Jesus. The scenes are shown with small statues (not paintings), carved in great detail and painted with bright colors. It’s like a three-dimensional Bible made of wood.
